Life for Adalgisa Soares Alves has been very complex since the birth of her daughter Graziely Alves Régis. During her pregnancy, she suffered from rubella and when her baby was born, the doctors gave her only three months to live, since Gaziely had been born with hydrocephalus and unlike other cases, this one was quite serious.

Hydrocephalus is a disease that has a cure, for this reason, doctors, at the time, put a valve in his skull to drain excess fluid.; however, the newborn baby’s body immediately rejected it.

It is there where his brave story begins. Graziely, who is Brazilian, suffers from ‘giant hydrocephalus’ and against all odds has, to this day, exceeded the expectations of doctors; she is now 29 years old and is known as ‘the giant baby’.

Added to the above, her mother believes that she feels and listens. “We talk, she smiles. Doctors can even say that she doesn’t understand anything, that she has no brain. But to me, she understands.” the mother commented to local media.

“It is really love. There is no other word. I love her, just the way she is,” she adds.

Now, this mother and daughter live in a residential house in Nova Terra, in Sao José De Ribamar (Brazil) and to pay for the medicines they must carry out fundraising campaigns that can cover the young woman’s expenses. The mother said that they also require basic basket donations, they need a chair and a special mattress so that they can mobilize.

“Graziely needs BigFral Plus brand geriatric diapers, Mucilon in different flavors, milk flour, Neston, whole milk powder,” the woman told local media.

In addition, she has asked for help to buy a mattress and a special chair that will allow her daughter to be comfortable and also help her move her to different places. Since the street is also another battlefield for both.

Alves, as a typical mother would have done too, has had to leave her job and other activities in her life to dedicate herself exclusively to her care. It should be noted that Gaziely has a fragile immune system and requires attention. “I don’t expect anything from her. I only give what I can give, which is my love. It’s really love. There is no other word. I love her, just the way she is.”

What is hydrocephalus?

Hydrocephalus is the buildup of fluid within the deep cavities (ventricles) of the brain. Excess fluid enlarges the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain.

Cerebrospinal fluid usually flows through the ventricles and covers the brain and spinal cord. However, pressure from too much cerebrospinal fluid related to hydrocephalus can damage brain tissue and cause problems with brain function, according to experts at the Mayo Clinic.

Some of the most common signs and symptoms of hydrocephalus in babies are as follows:

  • A rapid increase in head size
  • an unusually large head
  • A bulge or fontanel on the top of the head

Several ailments can lead to hydrocephalus. A common one before birth, or at the time of birth, is aqueductal stenosis, a condition in which the passageway connecting two of the four main ventricles of the brain is so narrow that fluid cannot pass freely, according to Standfordchildrens.org.

Spina bifida and other spinal disorders can also cause prenatal hydrocephalus. In addition to those congenital forms, hydrocephalus can also be acquired after birth.
