The lost life of Judee Sill is reborn in comics
Three records, a crazy life, an overdose: Graham’s talented protege
Nash is entitled to his album.
To hear the crystalline songs of Judee Sill, her many references to God, to see one of her rare videos in concert where she seems so wise, one would imagine a young girl from the 70s. And yet! The life of the openly bisexual folk singer was as intense as it was brief until her overdose in 1979: she went through prison, carried out armed robberies, became a prostitute and was overthrown by the actor Danny Kaye’s car.
The angel-voiced rebel wanted to be ‘the greatest songwriter of the world”, she finally released only two albums during her lifetime, without meeting with success, before producer Jim O’Rourke resuscitated them in 2005 and released the third opus on which she was working. Her harmonic genius is finally recognized, influenced by the Bach she played in prison, and American folk begins to take up her songs.
Difficult investigation
It is by the grace of Spotify that Juan Díaz Canales, screenwriter of “Blacksad” or even of “Corto Maltese”, discovered Judee Sill. He falls in love with her song “The Kiss” and investigates its author. A complicated investigation, as her life remains poorly documented, surrounded by fantasies and gossip. But he discovers her generosity, her rebellion, her tumultuous loves, her rage at not having the success that everyone promised her.
With the slightly psychedelic and colorful line of Jesús Alonso Iglesias, the comic book gives life and flesh to the folk girl with large round glasses who grumbled while opening for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, launching to the public: “Buy my records , that I no longer have to open these brats!”
