The new Algerian ambassador to Spain, Abdelfetah Daghmoum, has taken up residence in Madrid, Iberian media report. An arrival which comes the day after the visit to Morocco by the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs. A trip marked by support, reiterated by José Manuel Albares, for the Moroccan plan for autonomy in Western Sahara.
As when the Algerian government proposed the name of the diplomat, after a 17-month “break”, or when the executive chaired by Pedro Sanchez gave its approval, the arrival of Ambassador Abdelfetah Daghmoum in the Spanish capital was passed over in silence by the Algerian press.
The return of the Algerian ambassador was preceded by the announcement from the public company Air Algérie of the resumption of its flights to major Spanish cities, thus signing the lifting of sanctions against Spain decreed, in May 2022, in responds to Pedro Sanchez’s support for the Moroccan position on the Sahara.
“There was a statement from the Spanish Prime Minister concerning the Spanish position on the Sahrawi question. The choice of destinations is a sovereign decision. Algerians have the sovereignty to make decisions,” the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Algerian Lower House, Mohamed Hani, then justified in statements to the press.
