The rise of Nikolaus Marschik to number two in the foreign office

Nikolaus Marschik succeeds Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal as Secretary General. He was head of cabinet and ambassador in Berlin and Brussels.

Ambassador in Berlin, then until recently at the EU representation in Brussels and from September Secretary General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: these are the most important career stations of Nikolaus Marschik, who also takes over the management of the international law office (Section 1) in the ministry. Until 2018, the two functions were linked and occupied in one person. This was announced by the Foreign Ministry around six months before the castling – together with the appointment of Elisabeth Kornfeind as head of the Europe and Economy Section and Georg Stillfried as head of the Consular Affairs Department.

Marschik will succeed Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, who reached legal retirement age a few months ago. The career diplomat, previously head of crisis management and citizen services at the foreign office, press and government spokesman and UN Deputy Secretary General in New York, will leave the diplomatic service in the summer.
