Geneva – Archyde.com
The largest white diamond will be auctioned in Geneva next week, as part of a sale by Christie’s and includes two precious stones, each weighing more than 200 carats.
Christie’s said the pear-shaped “rock” diamond, roughly the size of a golf ball, weighs 228.31 carats, and is expected to sell for about $30 million.
“Often with these large stones, some form is sacrificed in order to maintain weight,” Max Fausset, director of jewelry at Christie’s in Geneva, told Archyde.com.
He added that this “perfectly proportioned pear-shaped” diamond is one of the rarest gemstones ever to be auctioned.
Diamond prices rebounded globally due to the sanctions imposed on Russia, its main producer, as well as the return of events attended by dignitaries, with the lifting of restrictions imposed to contain the Corona pandemic.
The diamond (the rock) was mined and polished in South Africa. The previous record for a white diamond auction was a 163.41 carat gem sold in 2017.
Christie’s is also selling a yellow, 205.07-carat cushion-shaped diamond called the “Red Cross Diamond” because an unspecified portion of the auction proceeds will go to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva.
