DUIHK

The communications director of the DUIHK has denied a theory spread by the Orbán government about the establishment of Asian battery factories.

Dirk Wölfer told the podcast of the liberal news portal 24.hu that the German-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DUIHK) did not know that the intensive settlement of Chinese and South Korean battery cell plants was based on the “express wish” of the Germans already present in the country Automobile plants successes. Of course, cost efficiency is an important competitive factor, but there is also satisfactory geographical proximity in the region, so the battery plants do not necessarily have to come to Hungary.

Regarding various areas of conflict, Wölfer said that the role of politics is overestimated in this country and that Berlin does not want to take on the role of mediator when there are disputes between investors and the Orbán government. Export-oriented companies in the manufacturing sector also have fewer complaints and are generally more satisfied with the environment. Complaints are more likely to be brought to the Chamber by companies that serve the Hungarian market. As its communications director emphasized, the DUIHK understands the economic policy intentions of the Orbán government, but in such cases regularly asks that the norms of community law be upheld. This applies not least to retail, where Wölfer assumes that, in addition to SPAR, other foreign companies could take legal action.
