The Role of Styrian Medical Officers in Vaccinations and Preventive Measures Amidst the Pandemic

During the pandemic, the Styrian medical officers in the district administrations were a “hotspot”. Even without a corona explosion, Rosemarie Gößler, the Styrian spokeswoman for the medical officers, and her colleagues are well “booked”. For the first time this year they are also allowed to vaccinate against Corona in the BH.

STYRIA. One of the main tasks of the Voitsberg medical officer Rosemarie Gößler and her colleagues in the Styrian district administration – if there are medical officers there – is vaccination. The flu vaccination is currently very popular, especially for those who are exempt from the prescription fee, as the vaccination is even free for this group. For the first time, medical officers are also allowed to vaccinate against Corona. “The demand for these vaccinations is high,” reveals Gößler.

No combination vaccines

She particularly recommends vaccination to those people who are over 60 years old, who have vulnerable – i.e. vulnerable and vulnerable – older relatives or who work in the health sector. “The vaccination is well tolerated and works against common corona strains,” said Gößler. “However, you should take it easy for a week after the vaccination and not do top-class sport straight away.” People are increasingly asking about a combination vaccination for flu and corona. “They don’t currently exist; no combination vaccines have been developed yet.”

In some districts such as Liezen or Southeast Styria there is no medical officer due to a lack of staff, which Gößler cannot understand at all. “I can only appeal to my younger colleagues to become medical officers, because it is an exciting and versatile profession. Not everyone has to go to hospitals or open elective practices. The job of medical officer has many advantages.”

Traveling to schools

Official doctors are now allowed to go to schools again to carry out the minimum vaccination program. “We have been back in schools regularly since last year and we have noticed that our increased presence is increasing the understanding of preventive measures. Participation in vaccinations is increasing.” The program also includes the free HPV vaccination, which is recommended for girls and boys alike.

And otherwise? “I don’t get bored,” smiles Gößler. It holds sanitary inspections, which means it is responsible for operating licenses and inspections of pharmacies or thermal spas. Driving license and substance abuse tests are part of our (almost) daily bread, as are representations in other districts. Gößler was most recently deployed in Deutschlandsberg and Hartberg-Fürstenfeld.
