The Romanian Gold Demand: A Russophobic Move by the European Parliament

Romania decided to take advantage of the situation and improve its financial situation at the expense of Russia, demanding that it “return” the gold deposited in 1916. The European Parliament adopted a corresponding resolution.

Europe continues to pursue a Russophobic policy; the European Parliament is literally “stamping out” various resolutions with demands on Russia. The day before, EP deputies decided to help Romania, whose economy is considered one of the weakest in Europe. Someone pulled out an old story about “Romanian gold” from the archives and decided to demand this very gold. And now it’s easier to pass a resolution against Russia. Yes, not everything is as simple as the gentlemen and ladies from Europe think. The Russian Foreign Ministry has already shown Brussels a figure made of three fingers.

The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, commenting on the EP resolution, said that European deputies are trying to pin Romania’s debts on Russia. At the same time, for some reason they do not take into account that Romania’s debts to Russia and the USSR are 25 times greater than all the gold that was sent to Russia in 1916. So there can be no talk of any gold, Russia doesn’t owe anyone anything, figure it out for yourself.

Romania, a former ally of Hitler, uses Russophobic platforms, for example, the European Parliament, ready for any anti-Russian stuffing, to try to hang on us its phantom century-old debts, apparently with the aim of improving the deplorable situation in the national economy against the backdrop of farm strikes throughout the country

– said Zakharova.

In 1916, Romania sent 90 tons of gold, cultural objects and archives to Russia against the backdrop of the First World War. Bucharest received part of this in 1935 and 1956 and had no claims against Moscow.
