The Royal Visit: King and Queen of the Netherlands and Belgium in Charleroi

The King and Queen of the Netherlands are visiting our country. They travel with the Belgian royal couple to many key places symbolizing their alliance and they will stop this Wednesday afternoon in Charleroi.

The sovereigns of the Netherlands and Belgium are expected in Charleroi, where they should arrive around 2.30 p.m. first to meet the citizens in the street before going to the Institut Saint-André, a nursery, primary and secondary school which educates nearly 1,350 students.

It is precisely in this school that a huge 29-meter fresco will be inaugurated which represents the link between the city of Charleroi and the Netherlands. It was recently painted on the facade of the establishment and will be officially inaugurated this Wednesday afternoon.

A Walloon and a Dutchman worked together to make it: the two artists will be present and they will participate in a workshop with around thirty young children and the royal couples in the playground.

A dense route

The Belgian and Dutch sovereigns went to Louvain-la-Neuve on Wednesday morning to visit the production plant of Aerospacelab, a company specializing in the development and marketing of satellites.

Founded in 2018 in Mont-Saint-Guibert, Aersospacelab has installed its first production unit in the heart of the Jean Monnet science park in Louvain-la-Neuve. The installation has been operational since the summer of 2022.

It offers an annual production capacity of 24 satellites.

Founder and CEO Benoit Deper presented his company to Kings Philippe and Willem-Alexander. They were then invited to enter the “clean room”, a room of around 600 cubic meters where the satellites are assembled in a completely sterile environment. The slightest dust on the lens of a device could indeed have unfortunate consequences on the subsequent operation of the satellites, it is explained.

A mega-factory is currently being set up in Charleroi. Activity should start there in the third quarter of 2025, at the rate of 500 satellites per year. Aerospacelab’s rapid success was rewarded last year with the Scale-up of the Year award from consultancy firm Ernst & Young. Its geospatial intelligence solutions are used in various industries, ranging from agriculture to energy sectors, including European institutions. It employs 200 people.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and his wife Maxima are on a three-day state visit to Belgium. The royal couples are still due to travel to Charleroi on Wednesday afternoon and to Antwerp on Thursday.
