Prettner/Flachberger disappointed after dropping back to 31st place at the “French Olympic Week”: “The current results are not acceptable.”
After a strong start to the season with bronze at the Lanzarote International Regatta in mid-February, Keanu Prettner and Jakob Flachberger clearly missed their high goal at the top fielded “French Olympic Week” in Hyères. After narrowly missing out on promotion to the gold fleet, things did not go according to plan in the silver fleet either (especially on the final day). The 49er duo from Lake Wolfgang lost four places at the end and only ended up in 31st place in the final classification.
Cancellation cost the last chance
“We made too many mistakes, especially in qualifying in strong winds. But we know where our potential lies and how we can control it,” summarized helmsman Prettner. “We definitely have to improve for the next competitions, the current results are not acceptable.” The problems began on the first day of the competition when, after a good start, the duo capsized in high waves with places twelve and seven and thus immediately lost their result. After that, Prettner and Flachberger worked their way up again with ranks twelve and six, but since a third race was canceled, they ended up missing six points on the top 24 qualified for the gold fleet in 28th place. “It would be with another race maybe still out of the question”, Prettner lamented disappointedly at the missed opportunity.
“We always felt like we were on the wrong side”
The start of the silver fleet was again promising. After a fifth and seventh place, only two boats were ahead of Salzburg. Instead of storming to the top as hoped, they fell back to 31st overall on the final day with ranks 13, 8, 15 and 19. “We couldn’t keep up with the speed today and we always felt like we were on the wrong side. No matter what we tried, we were always behind at the first windward mark. In the end we can do with this day and with the regatta overall not be satisfied,” said Prettner.
