“The Secret Functionality of the Button Under the Traffic Light: A Guide for Pedestrians and Visually Impaired People”

There are also things on the road that not all participants are aware of. One such example is the button under the traffic light. Even knowing it exists doesn’t mean its function is known.

Button under the traffic light: That’s what it’s there for

There are various pedestrian traffic lights where the green signal to go must first be requested by pressing a button. Corresponding systems also have an additional functionality on their underside. There is a button there that can also be used to operate the traffic light.

And this has an important reason. Because while people who can see normally are notified of the color change between red and green, visually impaired people need an acoustic signal. It can be requested via the said button.

Thats how it works

An acoustic signal, often a tack, guides blind or visually impaired people to the signal mast. There they press the button under the traffic light to register. The request button is designed in the form of an arrow pointing in the direction of the crossing. If the crossing has special features, such as central islands, tactile markings are attached.

As soon as the traffic light turns green, the arrow either starts to vibrate or an acoustic release signal sounds from both sides of the road (or both in combination). The volume of the signal is usually adjusted to the surrounding noise to ensure that the sound stays above the traffic noise.

Beware of false information

By the way: It’s just a rumor that the button can be used for a secret SOS code. It made the rounds a while ago. This was due to a YouTube video demonstrating how pressing the button in a specific order supposedly results in an instant switch to green.

For the supposed trick that the police allegedly use, it is necessary to press the button 3 times briefly, 3 times long and again 3 times briefly. Like Mimikama back then though enlightenedthis information was incorrect.
