The security of the Stellantis brands is in free fall and it is already something embarrassing

The second round of results of the year of the New Vehicle Assessment Program for Latin America and the Caribbean, Latin NCAP, for the year 2023 shows another very worrying result from Stellantis of zero stars for the Citroen C3 due to, among other things, unstable structure , weak protection in the frontal crash, lack of side head protection and lack of warning to use a seat belt.

Stellantis safety in free fall: Citroen C3 zero stars

The Citroen C3, produced in Brazil, got zero stars. The C3 that offers two airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard equipment improved 30.52% in Adult Occupant, 12.10% in Child Occupant, 49.74% in Protection of Pedestrians and Vulnerable Road Users and 34.88% in Assistance to safety.

The vehicle was evaluated on frontal impact, side impact, whiplash (whiplash), pedestrian protection and ESC. This equipment is the most basic of safety and the only one available for this model.

The frontal impact showed weak protection on the driver’s chest and marginal protection on the passenger’s chest, probably explained by the lack of seat belt pretensioners. The structure and the area of the feet were classified as unstable.

The pole side impact was not performed because the vehicle does not offer standard or optional side head protection. Whiplash protection performed poorly on the adult neck.

In the child occupant, the model showed almost total protection, but the dynamic points were affected due to the poor marking of the ISOFIX anchors for the Child Restraint Systems (CRS).

The warning signal for the presence of an airbag on the front passenger seat does not meet the requirements of Latin NCAP and it is not possible to deactivate it. Some of the CRS that were evaluated for installation failed.

The vehicle does not demonstrate compliance with the UN127 or GTR9 regulation of pedestrian protection. Passive pedestrian protection shows marginal to good head protection and weak to poor protection in areas near the windshield and A-pillar.

The good protection offered to the pelvis was adequate and protection to the legs was marginal to good.

The Seat Belt Reminder is only available on the front driver’s seat but does not meet the Latin NCAP requirements and is not available for the front passenger or rear row.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Latin NCAP said:

“It is alarming how Stellantis has repeatedly rejected basic safety for Latin Americans and it is unacceptable that their vehicles achieve such a low level of safety when they know very well how to produce affordable and much safer cars.

Stellantis recently stated that it “reinforces its commitment to the constant evolution of safety in its products and markets models with the most severe engineering, quality and approval requirements”; With this result, added to the poor performance of Strada, 208, Cronos/Argo, among others, Latin NCAP strongly encourages them to review these requirements that are far from what consumers in the region claim and deserve.”

Stephan Brodziak, President of the Latin NCAP Board of Directors said:

“It is shameful that Stellantis, who knows perfectly how to develop cars with higher safety and affordable prices, has designed a car with such poor safety as the Citroen C3.

A car of this nature represents an affront to the health and integrity of Latin Americans, who are equally vulnerable in crash or run-over situations as the inhabitants of those countries where Stellantis would never dare to market a car with such low security.

As Latin American consumers we strongly call on Stellantis to stop producing cars that are a risk both for their occupants and for other road users with whom they share the street.

Vehicle safety labeling, including the Latin NCAP star rating, is a key tool to have safer cars in the region.

We also call on the governments of each country to incorporate this tool as soon as possible for the benefit of the population and the economy”.
