As Reisenfeld explains, “We were able to ‘see’ the limit of the heliosphere in the same way that a bat uses a sonar to ‘see’ the walls of a cave.” Because the intensity of these returning signals directly mirrors the fluctuations of the solar wind hitting the heliosheath, analyzing a complete solar cycle spanning from 2009 to 2019 allowed the researchers to compute a precise three-dimensional cartography of the border.

The resulting map shatters old assumptions about scale and symmetry. Facing directly into the oncoming interstellar wind, the sun-to-heliopause distance measures a tight 120 astronomical units—where one astronomical unit represents the roughly 150 million kilometers separating Earth from the Sun. Flip around to the trailing tail of the solar system, however, and that boundary blows out to a staggering 350 astronomical units or more.
