Is chronic kidney disease a silent disease?

Professor Bénédicte Sautenet, nephrologist at the Tours CHRU: “Ultimately not so much, because it generates a lot of symptoms that are not necessarily specific: chronic fatigue, cramps… Symptoms that it is important to listen to. This disease is common, even more so than diabetes. It affects 7 to 10% of people, compared to 4.5% for diabetes. »

What are its consequences?

“When the disease progresses, the consequences can be significant. There may be replacement treatment (dyalization, transplantation, etc.). The disease also carries a high cardiovascular risk. »

And before we get there?

“By listening to the symptoms and treating the disease in time, we will be able to improve the patient’s quality of life, slow the progression of the disease and limit cardiovascular events. There is no systematic screening today but we know the risk profiles (hypertensive, diabetic, overweight patients, etc.). Most patients are over 65 years old, but the disease can appear younger in specific cases. Hence the importance of screening by blood test and urine sample. »
