2023-08-07 13:03:00

The barge which sank on Monday morning near Dendermonde is losing fuel, indicates the Flemish Waterway Service. Officers have been briefed to investigate possible damage to the environment.

The 50m barge was loaded with bricks. “The load is not dangerous”, dit-on. “But traces of oil were found. It is apparently fuel”.

River traffic remains impossible at the accident site for the time being. The boat sank in the middle of the river. In addition, we learned that the boatman was an experienced man from Charleroi, said the logistics firm JoGo, which operates the barge.

The boat came from the Netherlands and was heading to West Flanders with bricks on board.

The rescuers were able to identify the boat and the King’s prosecutor was informed. Three sniffer dogs were brought to the scene of the accident. “We are eagerly looking for the sailor”, explained the acting mayor of Dendermonde, Dirk Abbeloos. “Research is currently being done on the surface because the current is too strong”he adds, specifying that the barge has completely sunk.
