Strengthening digital security includes creating strong and unique passwords to prevent unauthorized access to email and online accounts. Below, in italics, is the advice provided by the National Center for Cyber Security (NCSC) in this briefing.
Length:
Choose a password containing at least 8 characters, but at best 12 characters, or even more.
Heterogeneity:
Avoid using only lowercase letters. On the contrary, use all the possibilities of your keyboard to integrate capital letters, numbers and special characters into your password.
Coincidence:
Don’t use familiar words or sequences of numbers that make sense. So ban terms that appear as such in the dictionary as well as names, dates of birth, postal codes or sequences of numbers such as “1234”.
Uniqueness:
Associate a different password with each account you open. In the event of theft, only the account concerned will be threatened, and you can avoid any risk of misuse of your data by changing your password immediately.
Personalization:
Whether you buy a new or used device, under no circumstances should you keep the existing password. Instead, create your own password, making sure it is as complex as possible. Sometimes assigned to multiple devices, preset passwords may be known to other people.
