The Social Heating Fund: Increasing Aid for Energy Poverty in Belgium

The Social Heating Fund, worried about the increase in energy poverty, pleads on Sunday in De Zondag for an increase in the allocation to households in difficulty.

In Belgium, one in five families still heat themselves with fuels such as oil, explains the director of the Fund, Walter Walgraeve: “Between January 2021 and January 2024, the price of heating oil increased by around half a euro per liter at 80 cents then at 1.10 euros per liter, while in the same period, wages increased by 17.38%.”

Households with limited income are entitled to a financial allowance from the Social Heating Fund. Nearly 71,000 would benefit from it in 2023. But this aid is only 14 euro cents per liter. “We are asking for a change to the calculation system,” Mr Walgraeve told the newspaper. According to him, the allowance should ideally represent “a quarter of the purchase price”.

Discussions are underway with the federal government on this subject.
