On October 3, the Vox party presented its proposal, to which it added an amendment formulated by the PP.
The intention was for the Congress of Deputies to make the following message public and official:
“As a representative of the Spanish people, and with the utmost respect for the brother people of Mexico (sic), I condemn the attitude expressed by the president (sic) of the United Mexican States, Claudia Sheinbaum, against the figure of the head of State, His Majesty. Felipe VI and, therefore, the Spanish people.”
It was also proposed to urge “the government to disapprove the presence of Spanish political representatives at the inauguration” of Claudia Sheinbaum because, according to these political organizations, it represented “an attack on the figure” of the king.
It also proposed that the government “take appropriate measures to defend the historical legacy of Spain in Mexico (sic).”

How might the nationalist rhetoric associated with Vox influence future Spain-Mexico diplomatic relations?
**Interview with Dr. Laura Martínez, Political Analyst**
**Editor**: Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Martínez. The recent rejection by Spain’s Congress of Deputies to condemn Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum over her inauguration snub of King Felipe VI has sparked much debate. Can you share your thoughts on why this proposal failed to gain broader support?
**Dr. Martínez**: Thank you for having me. The proposal by Vox and the Popular Party (PP) was largely rejected due to the political landscape in Spain. The ruling Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) and various regional parties saw this move as potentially exacerbating tensions with Mexico, which they believe could harm diplomatic relations. Many legislators felt that focusing on past grievances does not align with the contemporary need for collaboration between countries.
**Editor**: Vox’s leader, Santiago Abascal, connected Sheinbaum’s actions to broader criticisms of Mexican leadership under President López Obrador. Do you think this reflects a growing nationalist sentiment within Spanish politics?
**Dr. Martínez**: Absolutely. Vox has been tapping into a sense of nationalism that resonates with their base. Their rhetoric suggests that Mexico owes Spain a form of respect, which underscores an underlying attitude that can be detrimental to international relations. Their comments linking Sheinbaum’s actions to past grievances reflect a desire to position Spain as a victim of historical slights, rather than engaging in constructive dialogue.
**Editor**: What implications could this decision have on Spain-Mexico relations moving forward?
**Dr. Martínez**: This could lead to a period of cautious diplomacy. While the rejection of the proposal is a relief for many who want to maintain healthy ties, Vox’s narrative may continue to fuel tensions in the media. Sheinbaum might view this as validation for her stance, which could complicate mutual respect and understanding in future interactions. It highlights the need for both countries to engage in dialogue that transcends divisive political rhetoric.
**Editor**: what message do you think this sends to other countries regarding Spain’s approach to international diplomacy?
**Dr. Martínez**: It signals that Spain is navigating a complex political environment where the need for domestic harmony often clashes with international expectations. While the Congress has chosen to reject a confrontational approach, it’s crucial for Spain to foster relations that are respectful and forward-looking. The rejection illustrates a preference for diplomacy over denunciation, indicating a desire to prioritize mutual respect over historical grievances.
