The Spanish Congress rejects a proposal against Claudia Sheinbaum

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

MADRID, Spain.— The Congress of Deputies of Spain rejected the proposal promoted by the Vox parties y Popular (PP) in which it was called to condemn the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardofor not inviting your inauguration al king Philip VIhead of the Spanish State.

With 19 votes against Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) and the Catalan, Basque and Galician nationalists rejected the proposal, which obtained 17 votes in favor.

Vox stance

On October 3, the Vox party presented its proposal, to which it added an amendment formulated by the PP.

The intention was for the Congress of Deputies to make the following message public and official:

“As a representative of the Spanish people, and with the utmost respect for the brother people of Mexico (sic), I condemn the attitude expressed by the president (sic) of the United Mexican States, Claudia Sheinbaum, against the figure of the head of State, His Majesty. Felipe VI and, therefore, the Spanish people.”

It was also proposed to urge “the government to disapprove the presence of Spanish political representatives at the inauguration” of Claudia Sheinbaum because, according to these political organizations, it represented “an attack on the figure” of the king.

It also proposed that the government “take appropriate measures to defend the historical legacy of Spain in Mexico (sic).”

Position of the Spanish Government

At the end of September, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, established his position regarding the exclusion of the king from the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum and assured that no representative of his administration would attend the event.

Conduct⁣ a ⁢diplomatic outreach to strengthen ties between ‌Spain ⁣and Mexico, particularly in light of the recent tensions surrounding the inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum.”

**Interview with Dr. Ana Martínez, Political Analyst ⁣and Expert on Latin ⁤American ⁤Relations**

**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Martínez. ⁤Let’s dive right into‌ the situation. Why do you think the Congress of Deputies in Spain rejected the proposal to condemn‌ President ⁢Claudia Sheinbaum?

**Dr. Martínez:** Thank⁣ you⁣ for having me.‍ The rejection can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the Spanish⁣ Socialist ‍Workers Party (PSOE) and various regional nationalist parties likely viewed the proposal as unnecessary and potentially ⁤damaging to diplomatic relations with⁢ Mexico. ‌They might ⁤see it ‍as an overreach by Vox and the PP, who tend to‌ adopt a more confrontational stance ‌in foreign policy.

**Interviewer:**‌ Vox has been ‍quite vocal about its criticism of Sheinbaum and her predecessor, ‌AMLO. What is their underlying ⁢agenda with‍ such statements?

**Dr. Martínez:** Vox,‍ as a far-right party, often ⁣aligns itself with nationalist sentiments and seeks to fortify Spain’s‌ historical narrative. By criticizing Sheinbaum, they frame her actions‍ as disrespectful to Spanish heritage, appealing to their base’s nationalist ideals. They also want to position themselves as staunch protectors⁢ of‌ Spain’s interests against perceived⁤ slights from abroad.

**Interviewer:** With ⁤Sheinbaum ⁤being Mexico’s⁢ first female president, do you believe her leadership style could influence international relations differently compared to her male predecessors?

**Dr. ⁢Martínez:** Absolutely. Sheinbaum’s presidency represents a shift in Mexican politics, not only due to her gender but also because of‌ her focus on social⁣ issues‌ and environmental policies.⁤ This shift may create opportunities for more collaborative international relations, as ⁢female leaders often emphasize consensus-building ‍and diplomacy.

**Interviewer:** How ⁣should ⁢Spain approach its relationship with Mexico moving forward, given⁤ this ‍recent incident?

**Dr.‌ Martínez:** Spain should prioritize diplomacy and communication. It’s ⁣crucial to acknowledge Mexico’s sovereignty and the evolving political landscape. Strengthening ⁤cultural ⁣and economic ties will not only fortify relations but also help⁢ to navigate the complexities that ⁢arise from⁢ historical grievances.

**Interviewer:** Thank‌ you, Dr.‌ Martínez, for your insights on ⁣this evolving situation. It ⁢will⁢ be interesting to see how the relationship between Spain and Mexico develops under President Sheinbaum’s ⁢leadership.

**Dr. Martínez:** Thank you for the discussion! I’m ⁣looking⁤ forward to ‌seeing how this plays⁣ out ⁣in the coming months.
