(CNN Spanish) — The Israeli ambassador has not been expelled from Colombia, clarified the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Peace, Álvaro Leyva, via X, formerly Twitter, after President Gustavo Petro published on his account that he was willing to suspend foreign relations with Tel Aviv this Sunday.

“The history of universal diplomacy will record as a milestone the senseless arrogance of the Israeli ambassador in Colombia towards @petrogustavo, president of the Republic. Shame. There are states at stake,” he published Leyva on Monday, then tone down and clarify that the Israeli ambassador has not been expelled.

“Even more… Relations with Israel will be maintained if this country so wishes. Our constitutional principles teach us and command us to respect international law. Something that must be two-way. Respectful relations between States will always be welcome,” he pointed out. Leyva.

After several publications by the Colombian president, the spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lior Haiat, spoke out on the matter and said that Israel condemns Petro’s statements “which reflect support for the atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists.”

In response to Petro’s statements, Israel has decided to stop security exports to Colombia.
