The Syrian atomic energy clarifies the objectives of an agreement concluded with the Russian “Rosatom”.

Russia – Russia and Syria signed, yesterday, Tuesday, at the “Atom Expo – 2024” forum in Sochi, an agreement for cooperation in the field of applications of nuclear technologies for peaceful use.

The document was signed between Rosatom and the Syrian Atomic Energy Authority, and the agreement aims to cooperate in the field of using nuclear and radiation technologies in fields such as medicine and industry.

In an interview with RT, the Director of the Syrian Atomic Energy Authority, Ibrahim Othman, explained the objectives of the agreement and its areas of application. He said: “There is an agreement concluded between Russia and Syria on the peaceful uses of atomic energy, and based on this agreement, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Syrian Atomic Energy Authority and Rosatom.” For peaceful uses of atomic energy, now (today) a memorandum has been signed related to the implementation plan for this memorandum.”

He added that the document signed today paves the way for cooperation between Syria and Rosatom in areas such as the production of radioactive materials used in diagnosing and treating malignant tumors, and with regard to non-destructive tests that are conducted for oil pipelines, fuel tanks, and aircraft.

The Director of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission praised the “Atom Expo 2024” forum, and Othman said, “Syria is participating in the event as it includes many activities, not just nuclear energy, but also applications of peaceful nuclear energy in various fields such as the environment and industry.”

The Syrian official pointed out that the importance of the event lies in learning about the latest innovations in the nuclear energy sector.

Yesterday, Monday, in the Sirius Federal Territory of Sochi, southern Russia, the activities of the 13th International Forum “Atom Expo – 2024” began, and the activities of the event, held under the auspices of Rosatom, will continue until March 26.

The event brings together on one platform high-level government officials, the largest global nuclear industry companies, and the world’s leading experts.

More than 45.5 thousand people from 75 countries are participating in this year’s edition, and the main topic of the forum is “the fourth generation of reactor technologies and Russia’s leadership in this field.”
