“In a tragedy with so many deaths, no one can be satisfied when we bring back to mind the pain and sorrow. No one is happy in SYRIZA and I want to be clear.”
Regarding the criticism that SYRIZA has received, Mr. Famellos said that “I have to testify that several political parties have tried to take advantage of MATI many times outside and outside of the real data”.
Referring to the causes that led to the tragedy, the president of the KO of SYRIZA noted that “not much has been done since then to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. For any state to do well it must be prepared to deal with and have a plan. All this did not exist at that time.”
Asked about the court’s decision on Rena Dourou, Mr. Famellos said that “Dourou did not hide behind immunity, I don’t see that happening now, but I don’t want to make offsets. Dourou asked for the trial to be expedited and unfortunately a large political front of pain and grief management was focused on Dourou.
He added that “in SYRIZA, no political person hid behind immunity or the law on ministerial liability” while pointing out that the former Minister of Citizen Protection, Nikos Toskas, resigned and “never took advantage of immunity”.
Regarding the institutional environment of the trial that the law on SYRIZA was changed, Mr. Famellos stated that “absolutely the opposite happened.
