The Temple of Poseidon changes “color”. 2024-03-01 01:45:30

At the edge of the Argosaronic gulf, the temple, built from local marble from Agrileza around 444-440 BC. it will accept the white cold and white warm color temperature to properly bring out the volume and depth, as well as the perception of its relief. The rich archaeologically interesting monument of Attica, created in the time of Pericles, will be illuminated with modern technological equipment after twenty years!

“Twenty years after the installation of the existing lighting of the Temple of Poseidon, in the context of the Olympic Games, the natural wear and tear of time, failures and alterations in the lighting bodies, resulting in the alteration of the lighting, require the installation of a modern lighting system” , said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.

The changes will not only highlight the iconic character and geometry of the Temple of Poseidon, but will also help to give it an image worthy of its importance and reputation, as mentioned at the meeting of the Central Archaeological Council on Tuesday 27 February, when the preliminary study of highlighting lighting, which was prepared by the company of Eleftherias Deco and its partners sponsored by the company “Mytilineos-Energy and Metals” and received a unanimous positive opinion.

The study is developed in two phases. The first phase includes the illumination of the sacred mosque of Poseidon, which is defined by a built enclosure and includes the famous temple. The next phase will follow, which will include the Fortress Walls, as well as the remains of the settlement, with the main feature being the main street. The present study concerns the first phase to meet the needs of the monument due to its location, from where it can be seen both by land and by sea. The existing lighting was implemented in the context of the Olympic Games in 2004. However, with the passage of time, various failures and alterations have occurred, which do not deserve the prominence of the monument.

Both the lighting fixtures and the lighting effect are weathered and damaged, and there are also maintenance issues due to outdated technology of the existing floodlights. As mentioned, the biggest problems were found in the intense warm orange color temperature with wide beam headlights, which does not help highlight the volume, relief and geometry of the monument. Also occurs “incorrect focus/aiming” due to movement and insufficient maintenance of the lighting fixtures. The natural damage to the headlights, such as rust, cracks and over-lighting in several places, burdens the viewing of the monument.

Sounio: Warm light within, cold light outside

The aim of the lighting study – as mentioned during the meeting – is to highlight the monument and its immediate surroundings in a way that makes its volume and geometry immediately perceptible from the surrounding areas, where it is visible, but also from a close-up view for cases of possible evening events at the archaeological site. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to place suitable lighting fixtures in the optimal positions.

The intensity of cold white will illuminate the exterior of the Temple, while the interior will receive warm white lighting. This differentiation of the intensities and the shade of the white light between the exterior and interior parts of the monument will highlight the third dimension of the monument, its architectural elements, and its relief and depth will be more noticeable.

Also, through the new study, a correct highlighting of the building materials of the monument is foreseen through high-quality lighting bodies of LED technology, high efficiency and lifetime and high color rendering.

According to the proposal, the new facility provides state-of-the-art lighting fixtures to ensure the quality and duration of the desired effect due to the particular conditions prevailing at the site. Also, the new lighting achieves the avoidance of light pollution by using specialized lenses aimed at the monument. Considerable care was given to the visual perception during the day and during the visiting hours of the archaeological site, such that all the elements of the installation and the lighting fixtures do not constitute an obstacle to the visitors’ browsing.
