The tenth installment of the “Fast and Furious” franchise this weekend won the race against “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and easily snatched the number one spot at the box office. “Fast X” earned $67.5 million in ticket sales at 4,046 theaters in the United States and Canada, according to estimates by Universal Pictures on Sunday.

This installment is the lowest-grossing box office in the series, which peaked with the $142.2 million opening of “Furious 7,” the only film in the franchise to top $100 million from the start. The domestic debut of “Fast X” only ranks above the top three. The last film, “F9”, opened with 70 million in 2021.

But this is also a series that has generally made most of its money internationally. “Fast X” opened in 84 markets internationally, playing in more than 24,000 theaters, where it earned an estimated $251.4 million. The main market was China with 78.3 million, followed by Mexico with 16.7 million. And it adds a global opening of 319 million dollars, the third largest of the franchise.

Directed by Louis Leterrier, “Fast X” brings back a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster and adds several newcomers including Brie Larson, Rita Moreno and a villain played by Jason Momoa. The ever-expanding cast also includes Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood, and Helen Mirren.

On the other hand, in its third weekend, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” made an estimated 32 million in North American theaters to rank second. It has now earned $266.5 million domestically and $659.1 million globally.

Third place went to another Universal juggernaut, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which is now in its seventh weekend since its release.
