San Casciano dei Bagni, 12 luglio – This week, cultural enthusiasts are in for a treat with two significant events in the charming town of San Casciano dei Bagni. The annual cultural review, “The Terrace,” is set to kick off with a film screening and book presentation, both promising deep insights into history and contemporary issues.
Friday 11 July: “How Kids Roll. The Children of Gaza – On the Waves of Freedom”
On Friday 11 July, at 21:00, Piazza della Repubblica will host a screening of the film “How Kids Roll. The Children of Gaza – On the Waves of Freedom,” directed by Loris Lai. The film, initially screened before the current conflict in Gaza, highlights the unlikely yet extraordinary friendship between a Palestinian child and an Israeli child, united by their shared passion for surfing. In a region marked by war and tension, the film brings to the forefront the possibilities of coexistence, the strength of friendship, and hope for a different future through the eyes of two children.
The film has been recognized in several international festivals, including an application for the David di Donatello 2024 in the category “Best Debutive Director” and a win at the 52nd edition of the Flaiano prizes for the Best Film and Second Opera Prize. The film will be presented in its original language (English, Arabic, Hebrew) with Italian subtitles and distributed by Eagle Pictures.
Saturday 12 July: Book Presentation by Annalisa Cuzzocrea
The second event of the weekend will take place on Saturday 12 July at 18:00, also in Piazza della Repubblica. Journalist and writer Annalisa Cuzzocrea will present her latest book, “And Never Run Away. Miriam Mafai, the Secrets and the Struggle in the Storm of History,” published by Rizzoli. The book offers an intimate and detailed portrait of Miriam Mafai, one of the freest and most authoritative voices of the Italian twentieth century. The narrative is drawn from letters, diaries, and personal memories kept in a blue box, tracing Mafai’s political and personal life.
Paolo Franchi, Italian journalist and political commentator, will dialogue with Cuzzocrea during the presentation. This event is a chance to remember Mafai’s strong bond with the region, where she lived for many years, particularly in Cetona. Mafai was also a rapporteur for the Award for Cultural Journalism alongside prominent figures like Sandro Viola, Paolo Franchi, Nello Ajello, and others.
