The flagship Nikkei index gained 1.4% to 27,157.88 points around 00:35 GMT and the broader Topix index gained 1.18% to 1,909.53 points.

Consumer prices in the United States climbed 6.3% year on year in April, compared to 6.6% in March, according to the Commerce Department’s PCE index, which is the preferred measure of the United States Federal Reserve. (Fed) to judge inflation.

On the foreign exchange market, the yen fell moderately against the dollar, at the rate of one dollar for 127.22 yen around 0030 GMT against 127.11 yen on Friday at 2100 GMT.

The euro/yen rate also varied little, with one euro trading for 136.53 yen against 136.46 yen at the end of last week.

The euro was almost stable against the greenback, at the rate of one euro for 1.0732 dollars against 1.0735 dollars on Friday.
