Summer is here and the sun is putting a strain on your skin. Today, many creams sold in parapharmacies or in specialized stores highlight the presence of a sunscreen. You think applying a moisturizer with a UV filter is enough to protect your skin. The magazine 60 million consumers undermines this belief.

In fact, a moisturizer is applied only once a day, which does not provide effective protection for 12 hours against the harmful effects of the sun and, more particularly, against ultraviolet (UV) rays, the main cause of skin ageing. 60 million consumers explains that UV can cause ROS in contact with unprotected skin: “A set of reactive molecules and ions derived from oxygen, which promote cell aging and mutation. (…) The ready-made solution would therefore be to protect against it using sunscreens. However, some of these filters, when they penetrate the skin, can themselves create ROS under the effect of UV“.
A large amount of sunscreen
To limit the risk, it is therefore recommended to apply a sunscreen adapted to your skin and its exposure every two hours. According to the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM), a quantity of 2 mg of cream per cm2 is recommended for optimal protection, ie 36 grams of protection for an adult. What is not the case with an application of moisturizer reminds 60 million consumers: “For the UV filter to have any effectiveness, it would be necessary to apply a large dose of day cream (2 mg per square centimeter of skin), which would cause discomfort or even shine on the skin and would be inappropriate for a moisturizer.“.

Finally, the association advises against the application of these creams with an SPF twice a day because certain filters are accused of representing a health hazard.
