Nearly 64 million voters go to the polls to decide between current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his main opponent Kemal Kiliçdaroglu and Sinan Oğan, candidate of the right-wing nationalist coalition ATA.

The voting process for Turks Abroad took place from April 27 to May 9.

The latest polls suggest a very tight race between Erdogan, who is seeking a third term, and Kiliçdaroglu, who cherishes the dream of bringing down his rival and presenting a new political and societal project for Turkey.

The elections in Turkey are marked by the participation of a new generation of young people, estimated at 5 million voters, who vote for the first time on 14 May.

Muharrem İnce, who was to be the fourth candidate in this election, announced on Thursday his withdrawal from the presidential race, but the Superior Electoral Council decided on Saturday to count the votes obtained by the latter.

For the legislative elections, which are also taking place on Sunday, 24 political parties are vying for the 600 seats of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (parliament).

The polling stations will remain open until 5:00 p.m. (local time, GMT+3) and the preliminary results will be announced the same day after 9:00 p.m.

If none of the candidates obtains 50% of the votes +1 in the first round of the presidential elections, a second round will be organized on 28th May next to decide between the two candidates having obtained the greatest number of votes.
