For the first time, scientists have discovered that the area of our brain dedicated to memory consists of not one, but two parts. The first manages past experiences linked to time and space. The second actively generates our future actions.
The brain creates patterns that allow us to adopt flexible attitudes. This process, however, requires knowledge of several things: the states of the world (such as specific locations) and the connections between those states (for example, the next places on commonly traveled routes). This system for managing our behavior would be located in the brain area called hippocampus; However, it is precisely the cognitive map of the hippocampus that supports our various behaviors, including associative learning, planning and reasoning.
