The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on Russia to withdraw troops from Ukraine

The UN General Assembly (GA) adopted a resolution on “the principles underlying a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace in Ukraine”. The document, in particular, calls on Russia to withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine “within its internationally recognized borders”, as well as to stop strikes on critical infrastructure. The resolution was supported by 141 countries, 32 abstained. Seven countries opposed – Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Mali, Nicaragua, Syria, Eritrea.

The resolution states that the General Assembly calls on UN member states and international organizations to “double their support for diplomatic efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace in Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter.” The UN General Assembly also reaffirms its commitment to the unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. The resolution warns Russia against attacks on civilian objects in Ukraine, including residential buildings, schools and hospitals. This document, unlike UN Security Council resolutions, is not binding.

The UN General Assembly did not accept two amendments to the text of the resolution proposed by the delegation of Belarus. In particular, Minsk proposed to remove the call for the withdrawal of Russian armed forces from the document, but intended to leave the call for a cessation of hostilities. In addition, Belarus wanted to add a call to start peace talks, as well as to call on UN member states “to refrain from sending weapons to the conflict zone,” RIA Novosti reports.

The UN special session dedicated to the anniversary of the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine was held yesterday, February 23. The Chairman of the UN General Assembly, the Hungarian diplomat Csaba Körösi, addressed Russia in Russian, calling it the most important member of the UN, and called on her to return to the “path of maintaining peace” and to “stop aggression.” Mr. Kyoryoshi expressed the opinion that “military decisions will not put an end to this war.” UN Secretary General António Guterres considers the prospects for peace in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict bleak. Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya called what is happening “a war with the West for survival.”
