Everyone knows Alena Vránová mainly as the Proud Princess, although those days are long gone. But the famous actress is not idle even at the age of 91, which was shown at the award ceremony in the Audiobook of the Year poll.
The winner of the poll was the autobiography of the writer Agatha Christie read by Alena Vránová, who, in addition to the absolute winner, also won the Unanimous Reading category. The expert jury particularly singled out the performance of the well-known actress, which makes the listeners feel that they are listening to the author of detective stories herself.
“It is an audiobook in which the listeners can immerse themselves and wonderfully inhabit it. The unique Alena Vránová, with her age, expression, expression of memories, copies Agatha Christie’s liveliness, her ever-present perspective, light irony, sarcasm and special humanity. She manages an extremely plastic expression in for several consecutive minutes to play a kind, soothing nanny, a creepy bully, the anxiety of a little girl and the distance of an old woman who only remembers a specific situation,” the evaluation reads.
Director Michal Bureš left maximum space for the actress. According to the jury, the moderate sound design and author’s music by Ondřej Brousek completes the audiobook in favor of the period atmosphere and the feeling of one long life well lived. “We can succumb to the feeling that we are listening to the writer herself. Alena Vránová, in the very difficult conditions of pandemic restrictions, together with Michal Bureš, created something quite extraordinary. Her slightly ironic and exaggerated presentation of the famous writer’s entertaining and detailed memories is the best advertisement for audio processing of literature,” she stated jury.
A twenty-member jury selected awardees in ten categories from a total of 90 titles submitted by 14 publishers in the annual poll, which is being organized for the eleventh time by the Association of Audiobook Publishers.
