While Moscow regularly seeks to “scare” by brandishing the nuclear threat, the West seems to react little to these declarations and demonstrations of new weapons such as the famous Satan 2 or the Poseidon torpedo. Despite appearances, on the United States side, current global tensions have nevertheless had the effect of reawakening its posture in terms of nuclear deterrence. As proof, the American Department of Defense has just announced that a new nuclear bomb called B61-13 is under development. It is a gravity nuclear weapon, meaning it is dropped from aircraft and does not have a propellant. This so-called tactical bomb has a power of 360 kilotons, that is to say around 25 times that of Little Boy, the atomic bomb which was used in Hiroshima in 1945. The B61-13 will not be carried by current strategic bombers, but rather by the future B-21 Raider.
A powerful tactical bomb
It will contain improved safety and security systems and its tail will have guiding elements to improve precision. For the rest, the B61-13 is not really original in its design, it takes up most of the characteristics of the previous model: the B61-12. On the other hand, it is much more powerful, since version 12 peaks at 50 kilotons. The Ministry of Defense announces that this thirteenth iteration will not increase the American nuclear arsenal which includes 3,708 nuclear warheads. It will replace older models such as the B61-7 dating from the Cold War and whose aging components make them unreliable. It should also replace the B61-12. If this bomb is called tactical, it is because it is essentially intended to destroy an enemy’s military targets. This is why it is dropped above its target by plane.
