The Urgent Need for EU Supply Chain Law: Protecting Children, Workers, and the Environment

Green helplessness in government to the detriment of child protection, workers’ rights and the environment

Vienna (OTS/SK) – SPÖ European spokesman Jörg Leichtfried sharply criticizes the blockade for a new EU supply chain law supported by ÖVP Economics Minister Kocher. “The fact that Austria is involved in overturning a negotiated compromise is a disgrace. The supply chain law would be an important step in the fight against child labor, forced labor and environmental crimes. The fact that the Greens in the coalition are once again helpless against the ÖVP, which is making politics in the interests of the corporate lobbies, is extremely disappointing. The rejection of the ÖVP and FPÖ shows who these parties make politics for: for the corporations, not for the people,” says Leichtfried. He appeals to the Greens to put pressure on the coalition with the aim of finding a way for the supply chain law in the EU Council. ****

The planned directive is intended to hold companies accountable for child labor, forced labor and exploitation of workers, as well as environmental pollution in their supply chains. The opponents of the directive also allege that the supply chain law would be a burden for domestic companies. “99.6 percent of Austrian companies are SMEs that are not covered by this. Conversely, the blockage of the EU supply chain law primarily plays into the hands of those corporations that make cheap profits from child labor, forced labor or environmentally harmful production. Thousands of small and medium-sized businesses in Austria that already operate in a socially and ecologically sustainable manner would benefit from a supply chain law,” said Leichtfried. (End) ah/lp
