The arrival of Joe Biden to the presidency of the United States will be accompanied by a plan of US $ 1.9 trillion to stimulate the world’s largest economy, weakened by the covid-19 pandemic.
The president-elect announced on Thursday his proposal that includes a trillion destined to Americans through direct payments of US $ 1,400, if Congress approves it.
The plan also includes $ 415 billion to boost the application of the coronavirus vaccine, as well as $ 440 billion in support for small businesses.
The Democrat has promised to launch a new strategy against the pandemic that has left more than 385,000 people dead in United States.
In his campaign last year, he emphasized the need to do a better job against COVID-19 than President Donald Trump has done.
“A crisis of profound human suffering is in sight and there is no time to lose. We have to act and we have to act now,” he said in a message broadcast on primetime Thursday.
“The very health of our nation is at stake (…) There will be setbacks, but I will always be honest with you, both about the progress we are making and the setbacks we find.”
The pace of the Trump administration’s vaccination work has been criticized by health officials who say it must be accelerated. Biden said he aims to apply 100 million doses in 100 days.
The US $ 1,400 Direct Payments Proposal for Americans would be added to the checks for US $ 600 that the government of Trump already delivered in December.
The plan comes at a time when the coronavirus breaks rIt’scords, more than 200,000 new cases every day in the country hardest hit by the pandemic.
Unemployment claims have reached their highest weekly level since August, with more than 18 million people unemployed in all the country.
Biden also comes at a time when the impeachment of his predecessor is being debated in Congress.
Will Congress approve the plan?
Republicans are likely to be opposed to generating additional trillions of dollars in debt that the United States has already incurred to deal with the pandemic.
The incoming president acknowledged that his plan “is not cheap.”
But he will have the help of the Democrats, who by the time he takes office on January 20 will already control both houses of Congress by narrow margins.
