Russia considered, on Saturday, that the US decision to provide Ukraine with cluster munitions is a “sign of weakness” and will not affect the course of Moscow’s military actions.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement that the US decision, which was announced on Friday, “is an act of desperation and a sign of weakness against the backdrop of the failure of the much publicized Ukrainian counterattack.”
And she considered that “the last ‘miracle’ weapon that Washington and Kiev rely on, without thinking about its dangerous consequences, will have no effect on the special military operation,” which is the official description that Russia adopts to refer to its invasion of Ukraine as of February 2022.
Zakharova believed that the US decision shows “the hostile anti-Russian path adopted by the United States, which aims to extend the conflict in Ukraine for as long as possible,” considering that Kiev’s pledge not to use these weapons against civilian-populated areas is “worthless.”
And the United States announced, on Friday, its decision to supply Ukraine with cluster bombs for the first time since the start of the Russian invasion of its lands, in a move that was criticized by international organizations.
The decision, which US President Joe Biden confirmed was “very difficult” to take, came at a time when Kiev forces were struggling to advance on the ground in a counter-attack it launched a month ago to recover Russian-controlled territory in eastern and southern Ukraine.
Washington confirmed that it had obtained guarantees from Kiev that these weapons, which were banned by several countries, would not be used against civilians.
Russia, in turn, uses this type of ammunition in its war against Ukraine.
