“The Usha controversy: Understanding the ongoing strike in Indian Wrestling Federation”

2023-05-04 23:30:00

GodShia Wrestling Federation president Brij Bhushan on account of his comments about the ongoing strike against Sharan Singh, the president of the Indian Olympic Association P.T. Some people were pelting stones at Usha for a week. Usha’s comment that ‘starring on the streets will tarnish the country’s image’ has sparked controversy. Media editorial advising Usha, senior journalist’s Facebook post reminiscing about pampering Kochusha and taking Usha and her husband to the minister. The former sports reporter lamented that Usha has become a mere politician, the former minister said that the admiration for Usha has gone, the women’s minister said that Usha has lost her status and value. P told the women wrestlers who raised their voices for their honor to keep quiet. T. Another prominent person said that he sympathizes with Usha.

It seemed that the responses were without knowing what Usha had said. Usha said; “Instead of approaching the association with complaints, the players have taken to the streets again. It’s not good for the sport. Such protests will tarnish the country’s image. India has a good image internationally. Such negative publicity is not good for the country. The association is not only with the wrestlers but with all the players who have represented India. But that’s only legal. Actors sit on streets and seek support from political parties. That is what disappoints me’ was Usha’s response.

No matter how much I think about it, I don’t understand what is wrong with what Usha said. Internationally famous sportspersons sitting on the public road in protest will bring glory or dishonor to the country. What is the problem in saying that the association is with all the players who have represented India? Does the president of the association not have the right to ask if he should not have approached the association before going on the street? Is Ushaya, a former Olympian, not free to say that it is not right for sportsmen to sit on dharna in the streets and seek the support of political parties.

Usha was not just sitting around commenting. He reached the venue and informed that he was with the players. Usha’s feet were bowed down and received by the protesters at Dharnavedi. Usha also convinced the stars that ‘I am with you’.

Whether it is the Indian Olympic Association or the Union Sports Ministry, can we proceed with the natural and legal steps taken when such incidents occur?

The central government started taking action when the sexual allegations of the wrestlers were raised. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur directly intervened. The Union Sports Ministry has asked the wrestling federation to provide an explanation within 72 hours. A committee chaired by Marycom has also been appointed to look into the matter. The Indian Olympic Association has also appointed a three-member committee for the day-to-day operations of the wrestling federation.

Meanwhile, on April 21, seven girls filed a police complaint against Brijbhushan Sharan Singh. Alleging that the police are not registering an FIR on the complaint, Olympic medalists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia took to the streets to protest. The police position was that they would take a case on such allegations only after preliminary investigation. The demand was to file a case immediately. Political parties were requested to support the protest. All the anti-BJP parties came in support. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court that a case would be filed against the allegations and the Delhi Police filed a case. A case was filed under the POCSO Act on the complaint of sexual abuse of a minor. Still, the new stance of the sports players is that the strike will continue. The new slogan is strike till Brij Bhushan is jailed. The development so far strengthens the suspicion that there is something else behind the accusations and protests. The important thing is that the accused ex-wrestler is a BJP MP. Haryana Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has been accused from the beginning of agitating the wrestlers for a strike. Wrestlers are taken to the streets to spread ‘Jat politics’; Can the suspects be blamed for allegations that Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Poonia and Vinesh Phogat are puppets in the hands of the opposition?

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPM leaders and Congress leaders seized the opportunity and jumped into the strike. Celebrities like Sania Mirza have also come in support. It is everyone’s responsibility and duty to stand with and support stars if there has been sexual violence against them. Politicians and athletes should do the same. But it is unacceptable that the opposition parties are trying to take political advantage of the struggle of the wrestlers. It causes a distraction from the original subject. P.T. intervened in the matter. The stone pelting against Usha underlines that.

Not even knowing what Usha had said, there were two Malayalam women leading the charge against her. Former Minister P.K. Mrs. and present Minister Bindu. Mrs. says that her admiration for Usha is gone. Bindu laments that Usha has lost her status and value. The irony is that Usha’s exact position is being slammed by those who gauge the severity of sexual harassment by their comrades. P.T. When Usha was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, CPM Central Committee member and Rajya Sabha member Elamaram Karim publicly criticized her. Remember that those who did not utter a single word then will now be enlightened when they cry and counsel.
