Promised at the start of the year by Macron, the vaccination of 5th graders will begin well from the start of the school year with the collection of parental consent, before two injections in the fall and spring.

The “widespread” vaccination of students in 5th grade against the papillomavirus, promised at the start of the year by Emmanuel Macron, will begin well from the start of the school year with the collection of parental consent, before two injections in the fall and spring, according to several regional health agencies (ARS).

The homework was done before the holidays. Announced at the end of February by the Head of State, the vaccination campaign against human papillomavirus (HPV) – the cause of more than 6,000 new cases of cancer each year – is ready to be deployed in at least three regions.

A good first, ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine unveiled its agenda at the beginning of June: “From September” the collection of “authorization from both parents” will be done online via a “dematerialized form”.

“Mobile teams” of caregivers

Students who have obtained this parental permission will then receive the first dose “between October and December”, then the second “between April and June”, each time in their college and “during school time”.

The injections will be carried out by “mobile teams” of caregivers outside the establishment, under the aegis of “vaccination centers” already identified – most of them attached to hospitals or clinics.

The ARS aims to “vaccinate the 70,000 5th grade students” in New Aquitaine, beyond the target of 80% by 2030 set in the government’s cancer plan.

More cautious, its neighbor from Occitania indicated at the end of June that it was aiming for “at least 30%” of the age group concerned, i.e. “a potential number of 21,000 college students” vaccinated next year.

Completely free vaccination

Its calendar is even more precise, with a first injection scheduled “from November 6”, therefore at the start of the All Saints holidays, and the second “mid-May”, i.e. after the Ascension Bridge.

In the Paris region, the agenda is more flexible: contacted by AFP, ARS Île-de-France evokes “a first dose of vaccine proposed between October and January, the second six months later” and also hopes “to touch one in three students” out of a total of 150,000 5th graders.

On the government side, Ministers François Braun (Health) and Pap Ndiaye (National Education) have for the time being satisfied with a letter, intended for the parents of 6th graders – who will therefore go to 5th grade in September -, recalling that “this vaccination will be completely free” and ensuring that “information sessions can be organized at the start of the school year”, without further details.
