NEW YORK — The Vessel at Hudson Yards will reopen to the public later in 2024, but there will be some important changes in place aimed at keeping people safe.
The structure has been closed since 2021 after a number of people died by suicide at the site. Four people took their lives on the Vessel over an 18-month span ending in July 2021, ultimately leading to its closure.
On Thursday, a Hudson Yards spokesperson said they developed a plan to make the structure safer. In particular, floor-to-ceiling steel mesh will be installed on almost every level. Visitors will not be able to cut or remove that mesh, the spokesperson said.
“Through a closely coordinated effort with Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio,” the spokesperson said, singling out the creator of the structure that opened in 2019, “we have developed a plan to install floor-to-ceiling steel mesh on the Vessel and at the same time preserve the “A unique experience that has attracted millions of visitors from around the world. “We look forward to welcoming them back to the Vessel later this year.”
Four staircases and adjoining platforms will have steel mesh barriers, which will have no impact on the look or iconic views of the structure. That will represent about half the area that used to be open to the public.
The first two levels of the Vessel will be completely open. At the highest levels, only parts where steel mesh barriers were added will reopen.
The top floor will remain closed to the public.
