The Breitenseer Lichtspiele are the oldest cinema in Vienna. Actually – unfortunately this can no longer be officially proven due to lost papers – it is actually the oldest still open cinema in the world. In 1905 Theresia and Eduard Guggenberger founded a tent cinema. Four years later they settled at Breitenseer Straße 21 in Vienna’s 14th district, Penzing. The cinema is still there today. It was later run for 53 years by Anna Nitsch-Fitz, who will hand the cinema over to her niece Christina Nitsch-Fitz and Dieter Mattersdorfer in 2022. The Breitenseer Lichtspiele stay in the family. Nowhere can you feel the history of Vienna’s cinema culture better than in this place.
