The Violation of Disability Rights in Flanders: United Nations Convention Criticism

2023-12-22 06:34:00

Flanders violates the rights of people with disabilities. This is what the Flemish Institute for Human Rights (Vlaams Mensenrechteninstituut – VMRI), founded this year, affirms in a first opinion, reports The standard.

Although Belgium is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on Persons with Disabilities, Flemish policy does not adhere to its provisions. The VMRI thus criticizes the way in which the budget focused on disabled people is applied.

I hope this will wake up the government“, declared David Stevens, its director, in the Flemish daily. With such a person-oriented budget, disabled people buy the care they need. Experts determine the amount of the budget according to the needs of the person, who is then registered on the waiting list. This currently has 17,172 people waiting.”And it’s too much“, David Stevens loves.

The VMRI is asking Flanders to release more money to eliminate this waiting list. “The financing mechanism must be adequate and give people legal certainty. Today, their rights are mortgaged.”

According to human rights organization GRIP, some €540 million is needed to give everyone on the waiting list what they are entitled to. Some people have been waiting for 20 years, while others have seen the budget they were promised shrink. In addition, no timetable is given to them as to the date on which they will actually receive the money, denounces the VMRI.
