The Voice of Young Farmers: Florian Poncelet’s Vision for Sustainable Agriculture and Political Advocacy

Aged 28, president of the Federation of Young Farmers for two years, Florian Poncelet is originally from Thibessart, a small village in the commune of Léglise, on the edge of the Anlier forest, in the south of the Province of Luxembourg. “The family farm was run by my uncle, right next to my parents’ house,” he says. I grew up there and it formed the framework of my youth. The vocation of farming has always interested me, but I didn’t know if I wanted to pursue it full time, or share it with another job. I finally chose to take over this operation, in association with my uncle.”

As for his political passion, it was forged over the years. “I have always been interested in political issues, but I did not want to experience them in a partisan way. I wanted to participate from the outside, which allows us to be more ideologically coherent, to not depend on coalitions that we do not control. It is therefore through the FJA that I carry an ideal.” This is that of Walloon agriculture which can live with dignity, whatever the speculative context in which it evolves, which is also understood and consumed by the average citizen. “Today, only farmers, their families and those close to the profession understand what our profession is. The others scream at the first noise. In their eyes, we have the impression of being poisoners, criminals, while we seek to produce in an exemplary manner.” On the barricades and highways this week, it is the FJA, its affiliates and its president who are on the front line. “We are facing a pivotal moment that the political world cannot miss. Either we reach an impasse and we no longer talk about family farming in 10 years, or we choose the path of a nourishing and sustainable Europe,” maintains Florian Poncelet.
