But the raw material that makes sure that the gears of our daily life turn, without overheating and breaking, is that we are all cheaters to a greater or lesser degree, so we can put up with each other.
Netflix’s number-one series ‘The Gentlemen’ begins with the unexpected death of Lord Halsted, patriarch of the Halsted family and owner of a 500-year-old dukedom. Eddie Halstead (Theo James), a disciplined young officer who had devoted his life to military service, finds himself stepping into a new role as the rightful heir to the dukedom after his father’s death, for the will contains a surprise twist – contrary to tradition, Lord Halstead has chosen Eddie over his eldest son, Freddy (Daniel Eggs), to inherit the title and responsibilities of the dukedom. An entire cannabis industry of, let’s say, incarcerated thug Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone), who had made a deal with the late duke, for a pittance, to use part of the estate for both of his illegal but profitable operations. The empire is now, after Glass’s “incarceration”, run by his daughter Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) and because the apple under the apple… our daughter turns out to be crafty, brilliant, gorgeous, effortlessly fashionable and ruthless, who handles the day-to-day business of the drug industry like any business of its kind.
But a series full of vile, vile, monstrous characters from Britain’s criminal underworld, scurrying around like hyenas trying to wrest a piece of the business. Eddie is forced to play the gangsters on their own turf and fight hard, but the game is his. Will make it;
As Eddie navigates his new role as Duke of Halstead, he faces challenges both within and outside the family. The Gentlemen series, a spin-off of Guy Ritchie’s 2019 film of the same name, delves into a world where hereditary titles collide with criminal enterprises, presenting a mix of action, comedy and intrigue. “The world of The Gentlemen is a little bit of me. We can’t wait to bring fans back into this world, introduce new characters and their stories, and I’m excited to do so with this incredibly talented cast,” Ritchie told Netflix while working on the series.
The series weaves complex themes of power, loyalty and survival as Edward tries to protect his ancestral home while navigating the treacherous underworld that has taken root within its borders. Against a backdrop of lush landscapes and lavish sets, viewers are treated to a roller coaster of suspense and humor as Edward uses cunning and ingenuity to take on his adversaries. But, as Ritchie said, this tension between the aristocrats and the crooks is “where all the fun is.” After all, he explained, “that’s really what the show is about – the evolution from the zoo to the jungle and how to hunt in the jungle.”
At the heart of the narrative are the dynamic interactions between the characters, each with distinct personalities and motivations. From the likable and determined Edward Horniman to the wily and ruthless Bobby Glass, the ensemble cast deliver performances that bring to life Ritchie’s vision of a world where aristocracy and crime collide in a tight embrace dancing a waltz of terror and imbalance.
Throughout its episodes, “The Gentlemen” strikes a delicate balance between high-stakes action and lighthearted humor, while also finding a way to provide moments of respite amid the chaos. Clever dialogues, unexpected twists and cinematography combine to create an entertaining as well as thrilling result of action, comedy and intrigue.
Criminals are never interesting, who cares about a loser? Fraudsters and especially those of financial crime are completely unconcerned because when revealed their tricks are cheap, poor and ineffective. The serious way to make money, lots of money, is not illegal and not prosecuted.
