The Yankees win the doubleheader

Juan Soto hit a three-run homer and Cody Poteet pitched six solid innings in his debut with the New York Yankees, who defeated the Cleveland Guardians 8-2 to sweep them in a doubleheader.

New York, which took the first game 3-2, continued with one of the best starts to a campaign in its history.

The Yankees are 12-3 for the seventh time in history and for the first time since 2003, when they ended up making one of their 40 trips to the World Series. They are 8-1 on the road.

Soto, acquired by the club in a trade with San Diego before the season, hit his homer in the fourth inning off Triston McKenzie (1-2), who struggled from the start and walked six in four innings.

Poteet (1-0) allowed one run and six hits to take his first victory since 2021 – 1,056 days ago – when he was with Miami. The 29-year-old pitcher did not work in the majors last season, after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022.

In the first duel, Venezuelan Oswaldo Cabrera hit a two-run home run and the Yankees survived a scare in the ninth inning.

New York starter Clarke Schmidt (1-0) allowed one run in just over five innings before manager Aaron Boone opted for the bullpen. Closer Clay Holmes allowed a double to start the ninth before striking out two and getting a harmless grounder hit for his sixth save.

CUBAN Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a three-run home run, Ryne Nelson pitched six solid innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2.

An RBI hit by Lars Nootbaar cut the Diamondbacks’ lead to 4-2 in the eighth. Kevin Ginkel retired the ninth inning in order for his third save.

LOGAN WEBB allowed one run in seven innings, Venezuelan Thairo Estrada contributed two home runs and the San Francisco Giants cruised smoothly to crush the Tampa Bay Rays 11-2.

Webb (1-1) allowed six hits scattered throughout his fourth start this season. Second in voting for the 2023 National League Cy Young Trophy, Webb improved his ERA from 4.86 to 3.80.

THE BORICAN Willi Castro and Edouard Julien each contributed home runs, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1, swept in a doubleheader.

Minnesota used a seven-run attack in the twelfth inning to win the first 11-5.

IN BOSTON, Triston Casas stunned with a long two-run homer as part of a four-run first inning, and the Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-2.

Boston shook off the defensive problems that have plagued it at the beginning of the campaign and achieved its first home victory of the season.

NICK CASTELLANOS hit a bases-loaded single to end the game in the ninth inning, Kyle Schwarber homered and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3.

Alec Bohm added an RBI for the Phillies, who moved above the .500 mark.

JAKE BAUERS broke the tie with a three-run homer in the fourth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers blasted their way to another victory, 11-5 over the Baltimore Orioles.

The Brewers have scored 58 runs in their last six games and at least seven in each of those. That streak has tied the franchise record, set in 1982 and 1989.

IN MIAMI, Josh Bell hit a home run, Max Meyer allowed a run in six innings and the Miami Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 5-1 to get their first home win of the season.

VENEZUELAN Salvador Pérez drove in four and had two hits, Bobby Witt Jr. scored four and the Kansas City Royals achieved an 11-7 victory over the New York Mets.

IN OAKLAND, MacKenzie Gore matched his career high with 11 strikeouts, CJ Abrams hit an RBI triple and the Washington Nationals beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1.—AP
