International Women’s Day is coming soon. On the stage in Guangzhou, artists will use their works to tell “their” stories. The stage play “The Story of the Golden Lock” returns. Four female artists, Zhang Ailing, Wang Anyi, Xu Anhua, and Jiao Yuan, compose a song about women; dancer Xie Xin, who “danced and cried” her sisters in “Riding the Wind and Waves 2023”, wants to perform in the dance In the theater “Quietly Resurrection”, “Let go of some things and move on”…these “their” stories evoke the common emotions and memories of the audience.

  Dance Theater “Quietly Resurrecting”

“Halfway through life, let go of some things and move on.”

On March 7th and 8th, Xie Xin Dance Theater’s “Quiet Land Resurrection” was launched at the “2024 Women’s Art Festival” and performed twice at the Guangzhou Grand Theater.

In “Riding the Wind and Waves 2023”, Xie Xin “danced and cried” her sisters with her original modern dance “If”, and her emotional physical performance also conquered the audience. Why can Xie Xin “jump and cry” to her sisters? Perhaps the answer can be found in “Quietly Resurrected”.

From the age of 19 to 29, Xie Xin’s career as a dancer started with Guangdong Modern Dance Company, passed through Jinxing Dance Company and Tao Body Theater, and ended up with Lei Dong Tianxia Modern Dance Company, which lasted exactly ten years. This experience was like a step up the ladder, allowing her to move between different roles and identities. In 2014, she founded her own dance company. From a dancer who has won many awards to a dance company leader, she has to face more.

“Quietly Resurrecting” is Xie Xin’s “autobiography” about the intersection of memory and time. It tells the story of her feelings about life after spending half her life and facing herself calmly. “After half of life, you realize the fetters of memory…” We always recall those unforgettable scenes in the passage of time: sensing, tearing, and letting go. It seems that we have experienced too much before we realize the fetters of memory… …

Time not only gave Xie Xin strength, but also gave her an important gift in life.

Time is the beginning of this work. With the help of the trajectory of time, the dancer leads the audience back to the quiet place deep in time, entering a state similar to a vacuum without self. “”Quietly Resurrection”, for me, is about being able to go back in the middle of life, put down some things, and then continue to move forward.” Xie Xin described this work this way.

The past that I thought was self-consistent is still hidden deep in my heart, and all the profound memories will flash back at a certain moment, as if they were quietly rising.

To create the dance theater “Quietly Resurrection”, Xie Xin assembled a group of powerful creatives: Hu Yanjun, the stage designer of the dance drama “A Dream of Red Mansions”, Li Kun, the costume designer, and Wang Yubo, the composer…

For Xie Xin, creating “Quietly Resurrecting” was a great self-challenge, “so big that I stand on top of all my own experiences, but don’t know where to go…” The work explores the balance between concrete memory images and abstract feelings. The proportion of space evokes the emotions and memories shared by the audience.

Stage play “The Story of the Golden Lock”

Different from the original work, it follows the film’s expression techniques

Zhang Ailing, Wang Anyi, Xu Anhua, and Jiao Yuan, four female artists jointly created the stage play “The Story of the Golden Lock” as the original author, screenwriter, director, and starring role. On March 8th and 9th, the play will be performed twice at the Guangdong Friendship Theater.

“The Story of the Golden Lock” was written by Zhang Ailing in 1943. It is a tragic song for women in the old era. “The Story of the Golden Lock” describes the spiritual transformation of Cao Qiqiao, a woman from a small businessman family. She wanted to love but could not, and spent 30 years madly… “The Story of the Golden Lock” has the power to travel through time.

On the basis of retaining the main line of Cao Qiqiao’s life story in the original work, writer Wang Anyi made important choices in the plot: deleting the plot of his son Changbai and retaining only the story of his daughter Chang’an and her mother Cao Qiqiao spanning two generations.

“The Story of the Golden Lock” is the stage play debut of the famous director Xu Anhua. She followed the narrative style and expression techniques of many movies: fast pace and stylized stage. At the beginning of each scene, two people will stand on both sides to chat, ask for directions or eat watermelon, and then introduce the theme. This kind of treatment exaggerates the atmosphere of the market, which contrasts with Qiqiao’s emotions, and is also a “voice” of the play. In terms of stage treatment, Xu Anhua chose a simple “blank” stage presentation. The extremely simple stage leaves the audience with endless imagination. Xu Anhua said that without the restrictions of set and environment, the degree of freedom on the stage can be greater – from real to virtual to real, “there is more free space.”

Jiao Yuan, known as the “Queen of Hong Kong Stage Drama”, almost hollowed herself out on the stage and injected the soul of Qiqiao, completely shaping the character of Qiqiao. Since her first performance as Cao Qiqiao in 2009, she has left a deep impression on the audience with every performance. In 2012, Jiao Yuan was nominated for the Magnolia Theater Performing Arts Award for the Leading Role and the Modern Drama Valley 2012 “One Drama Awards Best Actress of the Year” for her role as Cao Qiqiao in “The Story of the Golden Lock”. In 2016, she won the “Best Actress Award” at the “One Drama Awards” for “The Story of the Golden Lock” and “Ruan Lingyu”.
