“There is no right or wrong position to deliver a baby,” says a midwife

If the so-called “gynecological” birthing position – the mother is on her back – has been very widespread for centuries, some women today would like to return to more… spontaneous positions. To better understand the phenomenon, Brut asked midwife Valentine Burucoa four questions about birthing positions.

“All positions are possible”

“Since the birth of theobstetrics, in the 16th century, it was customary to put women on their backs so that the obstetrician, who is now the obstetrician, the gynecologist, could see the perineum correctly and be able to help it if necessary, specifies the sage -female. But you can give birth squatting, standing, on all fours or on your side! All positions are possible, and that’s really the take-home message”.

“What wouldn’t be logical would be to choose a position in advance, whether it’s the gynecological position or any other position,” continues Valentine Burucoa. We see on D-Day what works for this woman, this baby, this childbirth, while remaining “safe” on the medical side. So obviously the women have to regain possession of the subject, but it must be done in good understanding with the accompanying medical team”.
