These are the differences between the 13″ and 15″ MacBook Air

For the first time in years, Apple has expanded the MacBook Air with one more model — now from 15 inches. The new machine, however, does not have so many differences in relation to the smaller model, 13″, presented last year – which inevitably makes us question why Apple has presented it so long after.

The fact is that, despite having several specifications in common, there are differences between the two models in addition to the screen size, as we will see in detail below.

Bodies

Although it is the most obvious, we cannot fail to point out the change in screen size between MacBook Air models. Thus, while the model announced last year has a screen of 13.6″ (diagonally), the version presented yesterday has 15.3″.

This means that the pixel ratio is also higher in the latest model, being 2880×1864 pixels — against 2560×1664 pixels in the 13.6″ model. There are, in all, 1.1 million more pixels.

Furthermore, both MacBooks Air feature a Liquid Retina display with brightness up to 500 nits, support for wide color gamut (P3) and True Tone technology.

dimensions

Of course, because it’s bigger, the 15″ MacBook Air also beats the 13″ model in some other specs, such as size and weight:

Thickness 1,13cm 1,15cm
Width 30,41cm 34,04cm
Depth 21,5cm 23,76cm
Weight 1,24kg 1.51kg

Audio

Also thanks to the increase in overall size, the 15″ MacBook Air features a six-speaker sound system and woofers with force cancellation, while the 13″ model has only four speakers.

Other than that, both models have wide stereo sound and support Spatial Audio as well as Spatial Audio with Dynamic Head Tracking. In addition, both feature a three-microphone array with directional spatial filtering, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and advanced compatibility with high-impedance headphones.

Núcleos de GPU

Although both MacBooks Air models are equipped with the M2 chip, the 15″ processor has 10 GPU coresGraphics processing unitor graphics processing unit.”>1 even in the most basic version, while the 13″ has versions with 8 and 10 graphics processing cores.

Power adapter and battery

In addition to the specifications themselves, the 15″ MacBook Air comes with a 35W power adapter with two ports already in the most basic version — unlike the 13″ model, whose entry-level version comes with a 30W power adapter (in version with M2 chip and 8-core GPU).

This is certainly due to the fact that the larger model has an internal lithium polymer battery of 66.5 watts/hour, while the smaller one has 52.6 watts/hour.

Despite the larger battery in the 15″ model, Apple’s official autonomy promises are the same for both models: up to 15 hours of web browsing and up to 18 hours of movie playback on the Apple TV app.

Price

Of course, another aspect that changes between models is the price. Therefore, while the 13″ MacBook Air will be available in Brazil starting at R$12,500, the 15″ will have a minimum price of R$15,000.

Money

What doesn’t change?

Among the features that remain in both models are:

  • 1080p FaceTime HD camera with advanced image processor with computational video;
  • Backlit Magic Keyboard with 78 (US) or 79 (ISO) keys, including 12 alphanumeric-size function keys and four upside-down “T” arrow keys;
  • Touch ID;
  • Ambient light sensor;
  • Trackpad Force Touch;
  • Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax);
  • Bluetooth 5.3;
  • Two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports.
