José Ramon Pereira, president of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh), gave a balance this Tuesday about the heavy rains of recent days in the national territory.

Pereira stressed that the rainy season traditionally begins in May, but in 2022 the rainfall came earlier as a result of global climate changes. He explained that the strong temperatures in the early hours of the day are causing cloudiness to form, which leads to heavy rainfall in the afternoons.

Rains in the west of the country

He said that the most affected areas are the Andes, the south of Lake Maracaibo and the north-central region of the country.

“The risk management system is activated in Mérida, Táchira, Trujillo, Zulia, where there has been record rainfall in the last two weeks,” he added.

Floods in Caracas

Users of social networks shared images and videos of the areas of Caracas in which floods have occurred on Tuesday. Something that users generally attribute to lack of maintenance in the sewer system.

One of the most affected areas corresponds to Catia, where sectors were flooded. The Sagrada Familia Parish School, in Propatria, was affected by the downpours on Tuesday. Similarly, in the Magallanes de Catia the road was under water the night before.

In different sections of the Francisco Fajardo Highway, gaps were formed that hindered traffic. Páez Avenue in El Paraíso was also affected by the rains.

On the road to El Junquito, land displacements and some vehicles trapped in the mud have been reported.
