A strange seamount that rises “like a Bundt cake” – that round cake with a hole in its center – has been discovered off the coast of California (USA) by the unmanned sailboat Saildrone Surveyor that was mapping the Pacific North, according to the mission team cited by Live Science.
The formation that still has no name rises 975 meters above the seabed, a few meters less than the size required to be considered a seamount, according to the parameters of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
However, oceanographers have classified the find as a seamount because the formation has steep slopes rising from the sea floor and the remains of an extinct volcano.
“Seamounts formed as a result of volcanic activity sometimes protrude above the ocean surface and give rise to islands like Hawaii. But this one is completely submerged and the crater that crowns it is still visible at a depth of 366 meters below sea level, “says the article.
Except for the crater, the formation bears no resemblance to a volcano at all.
“Usually seamounts have steep slopes, like Mount Fuji. But what’s interesting about this is that it’s really steep. It rises from the bottom of the seabed in the shape of a tower,” explained study leader Aurora Elmore.
