At least 46 people were found dead inside a tractor-trailer, in what is presumed to be an attempt to smuggle migrants in the city of San Antonio, south of Texas, released state Governor Greg Abbott in what appears to be one of the deadliest human trafficking incidents on the border between Mexico and the United States.
The discovery was made during the day this Monday, and according to the first information, other 16 people who were alive inside the vehicle were taken to hospitals of the said city.
According to local television network KSAT., the truck was found next to the train tracks in a remote area on the southern outskirts of the city.
The Mexican foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, described on his Twitter account as “Tragedy in Texas” the death by suffocation of the migrants in the trailer and said that the local consul was on his way to the scene. Later, Ebrard argued that among the hospitalized minors there are “two Guatemalans”.
A fire department official said there were no children among the dead.
Meanwhile, Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reina said on Twitter that the government regrets the “tragedy.”
