As Cameron Diaz decides to come out of retirement, the 49-year-old actress claims she was ‘used’ to smuggle substances, weeks before landing a life-changing role in The Mask.
Cameron Diaz is about to return to the limelight after taking an 8-year hiatus. For her return to the big screen, the 49-year-old actress confided in the British podcast Second Lifecomments relayed by Daily Mail. She said she remembered being “used as a mule” in the 90s, a few weeks before her acting career took off with a leading role in the hit comedy-fantasy The Mask.
At the time, she was a model in Paris and was in financial difficulty. Cameron Diaz explained that she raised enough money to move to Paris and pursue her modeling career, but unfortunately was unable to find work there. Until the day she found this job as “mule to transport drugs” from Paris to Morocco.
The actress, however, admitted that she was unaware that she was carrying illegal substances until she arrived at the airport, and started to panic when she realized it. “They gave me a locked suitcase with my ‘suits’ in it”she develops.
“I’m a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl in Morocco. I’m wearing ripped jeans and platform boots, hair down – it’s really not safe. I said to them, ‘I don’t know, it’s not mine, I have no idea what it is’. It’s the only job I’ve had in Paris.”she continues.
Upon her return to the French capital, the actress claims that she left the suitcase with officials, assuring that it was her first and last job in Paris.
His career takes off in LA
After these chaotic adventures, luck finally smiled on Cameron Diaz when she arrived in Los Angeles. She was contacted by a casting agent looking for a “bomb”. Producers were looking for a star to star alongside Jim Carrey in the hit film The Maskreleased in 1994.
If she initially refused the role, she then quickly changed her mind. “I had just gotten my period. There was no way I was wearing anything sexy that day. I was like, ‘Are you kidding?'” she remembers.
Since then, the actress has had starring roles in blockbusters such as The Holiday, What Happens in Vegas and Charlie’s Angels. But in 2014, Cameron Diaz decided to step away from acting and settle into family life with husband Benji Maddox and daughter Raddix. She was finally “convinced to come out of retirement” by Jamie Foxx and Tom Brady. She should return to the big screen alongside the actors in the next film Back In Action.
